Get Involved
As a former children’s attorney in Brooklyn Family Court I know how poverty can isolate a young mother and her children and create a climate ripe for child neglect or abuse. And I also know as the daughter of teen parents that a young family can thrive through support and nurturing by extended family and community. My professional and personal experiences sparked the creation of The Brooklyn Young Mothers’ Collective (BYMC). It was started to curb episodes of parent-child separation among young families due to child neglect, school failure and juvenile delinquency.
Since 2004, The Brooklyn Young Mothers’ Collective (BYMC) has provided disadvantaged young mothers with the vision to plan and the tools they need to build their future. I know that our work matters. It matters because a 19-year-old mother charged with child neglect was reunited with her baby after she participated in our comprehensive services. It matters because a 15-year-old first-time mother who had dropped out of school decided to return as result of her involvement in our leadership training. It matters because a 14-year-old expectant mother had access to a birth attendant who helped her have a healthy birth experience.
Through our individual and group work, we enhance the future success of disadvantaged young mothers and help them build successful lives. We want to do more and with your support we can. An investment by you will help BYMC continue transforming the lives young mothers and their babies. There are many ways to get involved in our work through the gift of time, donating goods and supplies or by making a monetary contribution.
