BYMC distinguishes itself by focusing on the mother. By engaging young women through individualized support ser- vices focused on education and vocational opportunities, we help them achieve a more positive future for them- selves, their children and their communities.
Depth of engagement: Our work is highly personalized and built around each young woman’s unique situation.
Focus on education: We ensure that all our young women are positively engaged in educational opportunities.
Physical and emotional well-being: Our doula services provide physical and emotional support during the prenatal and postpartum periods.
Personal advocacy: We increase awareness of social issues that impact the young women and their commu- nities, enabling them to advocate for themselves and their families.
Community leadership: We develop the young women’s leadership skills so they can become active citizens in their community.
BYMC works with young women aged 12 to 21 who are pregnant or parenting. These young women often lack the material and social resources that they need to create more positive futures.
BYMC’s in–depth relationship with each young woman enables us to have a high impact.
• Over 250 young women are referred to our services annually.
• In 2008, more than 90% of the young women became positively engaged in education and vocational training.
• We had fewer than 2% repeat births among the 2008 program participants.
• From 2009 to 2010, we doubled the number of young women served.
